Details of any species recorded that are new/rare/unusual to Wiltshire.
Two reliable sightings of singleton Large Tortoiseshell at Biddestone (Maurice Avent) and Roves Farm (Steve Covey). Several others seen in Dorset & Hampshire so a fairly strong immigration and may result in a natural re-establishment of this extinct breeding species.
One immigrant Camberwell Beauty at Bishopstone, Ebble valley (Lucy Byng).
Have you noticed any significant changes in the distribution of one or more species in the County?
Essex Skipper continues to colonise north and east Wilts. Adonis Blue is maintaining its recent establishment in the north. Duke of Burgundy and Marsh Fritillary continuing to decline in areas not on Salisbury Plain. Distribution of some other species appears to be ‘thinning’ in some areas.
Was it a good or bad recording season?
A good recording season with many records from c.150 recorders. Spring weather was excellent and early species benefited. Summer was dismal and many species’ numbers plummeted. Reasonable Autumn resulted in extended flight periods for several species.
Were most of the records collected by yourself/ recording groups/public?
A mix of all three. I supplied many but so also did some other recorders, some from widespread areas, some from just their own gardens and immediate surroundings. WOS members, Bentley Wood warden David Lambert, RSPB, NT and MoD staff and, of course, members of Butterfly Conservation all very supportive.
Thank you for you help!
