Your Wildlife Stories

We often receive wonderful stories of your encounters with Wiltshire’s wildlife, whether it is a rare record that is a first for Wiltshire, watching fledglings as they leave the nest for the first time or an encounter with an Otter in your back garden. Here you can read stories that have been sent in to us, and it is the perfect chance to share your wildlife experience.

Recent Wildlife Story

This recent story is from one of our County Recorders on a visit to Green Lane Wood Nature Reserve.

Large Tortoiseshell, Steve Covey/ WSBRC

"I found a Large Tortoiseshell at Green Lane Wood on 10/05/2011 at about 12.30pm. It was on the track through the 'wayleave' section under the pylons at approx. ST8806257489. It was very old and battered and couldn't fly well and was probably on it's last legs.

Maybe it came in with the Vagrant Emperor 'mini invasion' from Europe a month or so ago or had even arrived last year and overwintered...!?

Spoke to Mike Fuller and it's the first this year. He was there a few days previously and found a Duke of Burgundy at the southern end of the wayleave - the first for the reserve in 10 years! I also saw 5 Dukes at Morgan's Hill last week so nice to know they are still there and last year wasn't a one year wonder."
